PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — An 84-year-old man had to undergo a second hip surgery after a doctor put pins in the wrong hip in an operation earlier this month.
Frank Perrin, an Alzheimer’s patient, was in stable condition Sunday at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center after the second surgery Friday.
Perrin was initially operated on at Adirondack Medical Center by Dr. Craig Dumond, who could not be reached for comment. The mistake was discovered by nurses at Perrin’s Lake Placid nursing home. The hospital and state Department of Health are investigating.
“The doctor called me and apologized and said he did not know how it could have happened,” said Perrin’s son, James.
