Garden Grove to Forfeit Eight Victories Due to Administrative Error

The Garden Grove boys’ basketball team will forfeit its eight victories in the Garden Grove League because an administrative error caused one of its players to be declared ineligible, Principal Gene Campbell said Tuesday.

Campbell said some of the team’s nonleague victories might be forfeited too; school officials still are trying to determine the number of games in which the player appeared.

School administrators failed to properly file change-of-residency papers for the player, according to Campbell. They had two opportunities to do so, last spring and before the start of the 1995-96 basketball season.

“This time it’s an adult error, not the kid’s,” Campbell said. “Now everything is OK. We filed the paperwork properly [on Monday] and the eligibility was restored.”

Campbell added neither Coach Dewey Van Cleave nor his staff was at fault.

Garden Grove, which lost to La Quinta on Monday, 66-40, was leading the Garden Grove League with an 8-2 record and was 13-11 overall.

San Clemente wide receiver Trevor Insley has orally committed to play football at Nevada, Triton Coach Mark McElroy said Tuesday.

Insley, who was a Times first-team All-Orange County selection, set school records for career receptions (124), career yards (2,031) and career touchdowns (18). He had 64 receptions for 1,086 yards and nine touchdowns last season despite missing three games because of a broken hand.

He also visited Hawaii.

Lauren Netherby, 17, a senior and outside hitter on the San Clemente girls’ volleyball team, has orally committed to attend the University of Nevada, Triton Coach Rob O’Rear said.

Netherby is the second San Clemente player to decide on Nevada--teammate Paige Spaulding is scheduled to sign a letter of intent next week--and the fourth of five starting seniors on O’Rear’s team to earn a scholarship.

O’Rear said Jessica Olivier has agreed to attend Loyola Marymount, and Wendy Wilkins is headed to Westmont, an NAIA school in Santa Barbara.

Although the Brea Olinda varsity girls’ basketball team won 69 games from 1993-95, the junior varsity hasn’t lost a game since 1989--123 victories in a row. Last week, the JV team shut out Magnolia, 71-0.

“It’s unfortunate to not let anyone score,” Coach Jeff Sink said. “We committed some fouls down the stretch and they were in the bonus, but missed the front end of several one-and-ones. I’m obviously not in favor of a shutout. It doesn’t do anyone any good.”

Brea doesn’t have a frosh-soph team, and has only 25 girls in the basketball program. Most of the team’s victories are by 40 to 60 points and its closest game this year was 19 points against Mater Dei.

“They play so much varsity competition [in the summer, fall and spring leagues], it’s really a mismatch when they play any JV team,” Sink said. “The only time they play against JV competition is during the season.”
