Leafs’ Power Is On Against Penguins

Kirk Muller and Mats Sundin scored on consecutive power plays late in the second period Monday night and the Toronto Maple Leafs took advantage of a rare off night from Mario Lemieux to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-1, at Toronto.

With the score tied, 1-1, late in the second period, Pittsburgh right wing Glen Murray took consecutive minor penalties and the Maple Leafs scored on both power plays.

Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk also scored for Toronto, which won for the second time in 13 games.

Sundin missed a short-handed breakaway in the second period but was good on a second short-handed breakaway in the third. He tucked a backhand behind Ken Wregget for his 24th goal of the season and his fifth short-handed goal, one short of Lemieux for the league lead in that category.

Lemieux, the NHL’s leading scorer, had no shots in the first period, one in the second and two in the third.

Montreal 3, San Jose 0--Pierre Turgeon’s third-period goal broke a scoreless tie and the Canadiens added two empty-net goals at Montreal.

The Canadiens were on a power play when Turgeon took Martin Rucinsky’s pass and put a wrist shot to the top corner past Chris Terreri at 6:54.

Rucinsky scored 1:07 left to play and Turgeon scored again with 19 seconds left.

Ottawa 4, New York Islanders 1--Tom Chorske scored twice and Damian Rhodes stopped 29 shots at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Senators won back-to-back games for the first time since October.

The last time Ottawa won consecutive games was Oct. 22-26, when it won three in a row.

Pavol Demitra and Dave Archibald each scored their second goal of the season for the Senators, who are 3-7-1 since Jacques Martin took over as head coach on Jan. 23.
