Central Los Angeles : Central Avenue Is Focus of Symposium
Local mystery writers and architectural historians will discuss the past and present of Central Avenue at a symposium scheduled for Sunday, at 2 p.m., at the Dunbar Hotel.
The talk, sponsored by the Society for Architectural Historians, will focus on why the Central Avenue area once was a thriving cultural center for African Americans and what can be done to restore that, said Rochelle Mills, event coordinator.
“It was quite a bit different back in the ‘20s to the ‘50s,” Mills said.
Today, despite redevelopment efforts, the area’s economy is depressed, Mills said, perhaps best exemplified by the Dunbar itself, once a ritzy hotel and now the residence of low-income families.
There is a $10 admission fee for members of the architectural historians society and $15 for non-members.
