NEW BISHOP: The Most Rev. Joseph Younan, the eparch, or bishop, of the newly established North American diocese for Syrian Catholics, will celebrate Mass tonight in the North Hollywood parish church where he served as priest last year.
Younan was ordained a bishop on Jan. 7 in Syria and installed as eparch in the church’s diocesan headquarters in Newark, N.J., on Feb. 10. The diocese has nine parishes in the United States and Canada.
The Syrian Catholics are part of Roman Catholicism’s Eastern Rite churches, which remain under the authority of the pope but follow church rites and practices characteristic of Eastern Christianity.
The Mass will begin at 7 p.m. at Jesus Sacred Heart Syriac Catholic Church, 10837 Collins St. A dinner reception will follow.

SUPER SUNDAY: About 5,000 volunteers are expected to participate in the Jewish Federation Council’s annual phone-a-thon fund-raising day Feb. 25 at four sites, including the Milken Community Campus of the Valley Jewish Alliance in West Hills.
The campaign raises money to support the federation and its 16 agencies that provide social and educational services. The Milken campus, reopened last year after earthquake repairs were completed, is located at 22622 Vanowen St. and can be reached at (800) 870-4434.

ENTERTAINMENT FELLOWSHIP: Asaad Kelada, who has directed episodes of television’s “Family Ties,” “Who’s the Boss?” and “The Louie Anderson Show,” will be the guest speaker Thursday night at the monthly meeting of the Entertainment Fellowship in Toluca Lake.
The fellowship, founded by actor Robert Hanley, is a Catholic-oriented group for people in the entertainment industry.
The pizza dinner at Barone’s restaurant, 10123 Riverside Drive, begins at 7 p.m. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for guests.

GUEST SPEAKER: Herbert Gelfand, president-designate of the Jewish Federation Council for 1996 to 1998 and chief executive officer of De Anza Corp., will speak Friday at Valley Beth Shalom in Encino at the 8:15 p.m. service conducted by Rabbi Harold Schulweis.
The title of Gelfand’s talk will be “Israel, Our Children and Grandchildren.” The temple is at 15739 Ventura Blvd. and can be reached at (818) 788-6000.
