Nicole Terry broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 71st minute to lift El Modena past Aliso Niguel, 3-1, Saturday in a Southern Section Division II first-round game at El Modena High.
Terry controlled a well-placed centering pass from Jill Pearson and chipped her shot over Aliso Niguel goalkeeper Kirsten Roy, who lunged forward to block it. The goal came seconds after Roy had made a spectacular sliding save on Kaylee Whitfield’s breakaway shot.
Whitfield and Stephanie Esparza also scored for the Vanguards (19-5-2), who advance to face Long Beach Poly in the second round. Nicole Trott scored the game’s first goal for Aliso Niguel (13-7-3).
