Apartment Fire Forces Residents Out of Homes
NEWPORT BEACH — More than two dozen residents of a large apartment complex were evacuated early Wednesday as flames engulfed a bedroom in one unit, causing an estimated $27,000 in damage.
No one was injured in the 2:45 a.m. fire at the Oakwood Apartments in the 800 block of Irvine Avenue.
The fire inside a ground-level unit forced 28 surrounding residents out of their homes, Newport Beach Fire Department spokesman Dennis Lockard said.
The fire may have been ignited by flammable materials placed too close to an electric heater in the apartment, Lockard said.
The complex’s management provided displaced residents temporary housing.
