AT THE CLUBS : Moguls Puts On a Major Production

First it was Young Moguls. Then it became Hollywood Moguls. Now it’s simply Moguls, and the name is still a misnomer for the artsy, warehouse-size club in Hollywood’s seedy bar-hopping district.

When you hear the name, you think of some snotty-nosed boys’ club on the Westside, with long lines of bimbos and himbos angling to get in. Moguls is nothing of the sort.

On nights when live music is booked (generally four a week, with three reserved for comedy), Moguls offers a nice respite from the typical tiny, crowded and smoky Hollywood bar-clubs. By virtue of its spacious layout and high ceilings, Moguls is comfortable and airy, and the sound is surprisingly good for a space this large.

A six-month revamping was completed two weeks ago, christened with a live performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Changes include a rebuilt sound system and deejay booth, and a relocated stage. It’s now in the middle of the club, and when bands are performing, double doors behind the stage leading to a screening room are opened, giving patrons the option to take a seat and check out the scene from behind.

The latest addition to the weekly music lineup is “Loozer Lounge,” which kicks off March 5 with performances by Sound Assembly, Zen Cowboys, Iris and Towed Up. Despite its goofy name, Moguls is a worthwhile club.

Club Buzz: Spaceland continues to be Silver Lake’s most exciting live-music hang--an unannounced performance by Beck last week brought a cool gathering of old- and new-school artists, from an impromptu performance by Men at Work’s Colin Hay to sightings of Frank Black, Wall of Voodoo alum Andy Prieboy and various Beasties. . . . North Hollywood “Hessian” haven FM Station has nearly succeeded in its quest to become a full-time tribute club--with recent Van Halen, Red Hot Chili Peppers even Partridge Family knockoffs. This Saturday the Doors tribute band Wild Child returns. . . . The reopening of “Swingin’ at the El Rey” is scheduled for March 1 with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Big Town Seven. It will continue on the first Friday of every month thereafter.
