Amoco Oil Settles FTC Charges on Gasoline Claims: The oil company agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that commercials for Crystal Clear Amoco Ultimate made unsubstantiated claims about the gasoline’s environmental benefits and effects on engine performance. Under the agreement, Amoco Oil Co., a subsidiary of Amoco Corp., said it will not make claims about the performance or environmental benefits of its gasoline “without first having scientific evidence to back it up,” the FTC said. An Amoco spokeswoman disputed the FTC’s allegations, saying the company thinks it had reliable scientific proof for its claims.
