Cal Lutheran Goes Overtime to Gain Playoff

Guard Nicole Albert posted a triple-double and the Cal Lutheran women’s basketball defeated Whittier, 101-100, in overtime Thursday night at Whittier to clinch a first-place tie in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Albert, a 5-foot-5 senior, had 11 points, 13 assists and a career-high 17 rebounds. The defending-champion Regals (13-12) finished tied with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 9-3. The teams will play a playoff game Saturday at a site and time to be announced.

Albert made five of seven shots and played all 45 minutes. Cal Lutheran trailed at halftime, 47-43, and was tied at the end of regulation, 88-88.

Kari Holland made five of 10 three-point shots and finished with 16. Evi Orologas had 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Melissa Wood added 20 points.

Albert holds school records for steals (426) and assists (450), and is second in points (1,278).

Southern Utah 80, Cal State Northridge 50--Tannea Nelson scored 12 points and Carrie Dormire had 13 rebounds for the host Matadors (5-20, 1-4) in an American West Conference game.

San Francisco 68, Pepperdine 58--Reserve Jenny Frank had 19 points and nine rebounds for the visiting Waves (13-12, 6-7) in a West Coast Conference game.

BASEBALL

Pepperdine 4, Washington State 0--Pedro Loza and Rob Reid each had two-run singles for the Waves (5-8) in a nonconference game.

Andy Shibilo (2-0) allowed three hits in five innings, striking out five. Matt Torres, John Workman and Eric Brubaker combined for four innings of hitless relief.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 4, South Alabama 3--Former longtime UCLA Coach Glenn Bassett, now in his second season as coach of the Waves, earned his 600th victory in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor team tennis championships at the Louisville (Ky.) Tennis Club.

In 28 seasons, Bassett’s record is 600-93-2.

Seventh-ranked Pepperdine (8-1) will face No. 2 UCLA in the second round today.

South Alabama defeated the Waves at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, but Pepperdine took the other four singles matches. Michael Jessup at No. 3, Troy Budgen at No. 5, and Masahide Sakamoto at No. 6 each won in straight sets. No. 4 Brad Sceney defeated Marius Swart in three sets.

Pepperdine’s No. 2 doubles team of Simon Aspelin and Jessup defeated Swart and Johan Westberg, 8-3, in a one-set tiebreaker.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Brigham Young 5, Pepperdine 4--Isabella Lawrence and Angela Lawrence were the only two singles winners for the Waves (6-2), and teamed for one of Pepperdine’s two doubles victories in the USTA/ITA National Indoor team tennis championships at Madison, Wis.
