Playoff Games
DIVISION I
Santa Ana (18-2-2) at Westlake Village Westlake (18-1-2), 3 p.m.
Santa Ana has been winning all season on defense and that pattern continued in a 1-0 overtime victory over Trabuco Hills in the first round. Santa Ana gave up only six goals all season--one in Golden West League play. Santa Ana assistant coach Sal Lopez said outstanding midfield play by Jose Sorto and Mario Gonzalez has keyed Santa Ana’s defense. Senior Juan Reyes, who leads the Saints with 13 goals and scored the game-winner against Trabuco Hills, will not play the rest of the season because of poor grades.
Esperanza (23-2-2) at Capistrano Valley (8-7-5), 3 p.m.
Capistrano Valley will need a big effort to upset second-seeded Esperanza. The Aztecs went 10-0 in the Sunset League and defeated La Verne Damien, 3-0, in the first round. Forwards Mark Rodieck and Aaron Poling have combined for more than 40 goals. Capistrano Valley, led by senior forward Brad Chapin, won the South Coast League title and defeated Saddleback, 3-2, in the first round.
DIVISION III
Riverside North (18-2-4) at Santa Margarita (15-6-2), 3 p.m.
Senior midfielder Chon Kantikovit has scored three goals on headers in the Eagles’ two playoff victories. Defender Matt Blasdel returns after missing the Eagles’ second-round victory because of a red card. Forward Brian Piesner (14 goals, 11 assists) is the Eagles’ leading scorer but he has been slowed because of a muscle pull in his leg.
Moreno Valley Canyon Springs (14-9-3) vs. Newport Harbor (20-5-4), Kaiser Elementary School, Costa Mesa, 3 p.m.
Newport Harbor has won its three playoff games by a goal. The Sailors have been led by senior forward Justin Kerr, who has four goals and an assist in the playoffs despite playing on a sore left ankle.
