A new police substation serving the Oak View neighborhood has won final approval from the City Council.

Team Construction Management of Huntington Beach will make improvements to a storefront in the Vista Center at 17411 Beach Blvd. for the station. The cost, projected at $30,000, will be covered by a federal Community Development Block Grant.

The council approved a lease agreement in November with the owner of the shopping center for $1 a year.

The Police Department now operates a substation that opened about five years ago at Oak View Community Center on Oak Lake. Officers said that the facility has helped to reduce crime, gang and other problems in the neighborhood.

The new substation that will replace it will provide services to more residents and will expand community policing efforts in the Oak View area, city officials said. In addition, police services will be provided seven days a week.

The existing substation will be turned into office space for Police Department School Resource officers.
