Nation IN BRIEF : LOUISIANA : Affirmative Action Stand Draws Protest
More than 7,000 people rallied at the state Capitol in Baton Rouge to protest Gov. Mike Foster’s stand against affirmative action. There was a confrontation at the door of the governor’s mansion, where a black delegation allowed to deliver its demands to the door tried to shove inside. A police SWAT team pushed them back. Foster wasn’t in Baton Rouge. Twelve blocks away, former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, got enthusiastic cheers from about 175 people attending a rally by the National Assn. for the Advancement of White People. Foster called both rallies divisive.
