TONIGHT: DIVERSITY

Woodbury University in Burbank will present “Faces of America,” a one-person show on the topic of multiculturalism, tonight in the school’s gymnasium. The show is produced by Will & Company, a Los Angeles-based theater company that specializes in productions for the school market.

“Faces of America” is performed by Fran deLeon and written and directed by Colin Cox, who will lead a group discussion following the performance. Cox says the show, which deals with the questions of America’s diverse society from a youthful perspective, is one of about a dozen that Will & Company currently has touring throughout the state.

“Multiculturalism is a major issue in colleges today, “ says Cox, who is originally from Great Britain. “Abroad, an American is an American; but in America, an American is a white person.

“I really want to tell everyone, ‘you’re all Americans,’ ” Cox says. “So why all the labels and division?”

Cox produced and directed “The Merchant of Venice” at the UK/LA Festival in 1994. Also that year, he produced “Race2Love,” which was directed by Andy Garcia at the Los Angeles Theater Company.

“I want to stimulate a constructive discussion about what’s right in America,” Cox says. “I want to stop the whining. Let’s move into the 21st century together.”

SUNDAY: KID SING

The Choral Conductors Guild is presenting its annual Children’s Choir Festival on Sunday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Van Nuys.

Participating will be choirs from St. Mark’s, Canoga Park Presbyterian, Congregational Church of Northridge, United Methodist Church of Valencia and Westwood United Methodist Church.

Each choir will perform one selection for the festival. In addition, all the choirs combined will perform three other pieces under direction of guest conductor Loretta Robinson, who is director of the Master Chorale Children’s Chorus of the William Hall Master Chorale of Orange County.

The Choral Conductors Guild is a nondenominational organization of sacred music professionals representing all different faiths. The San Fernando Valley chapter is made up of about 75 members, says Bob Van Howten, the director of music at St. Mark’s and the festival host. Van Howten says this is the sixth year St. Mark’s has hosted the event.

“Choir festivals offer the children a chance to prepare music, to hear other choirs perform and to sing in a large choir made up of all the singers present,” Van Howten says. “The whole of the festival experience will be fun.”

MOUNTAIN MUSIC

The Topanga Symphony will perform a free concert Sunday in the Topanga Community House.

The program will feature Schubert’s Symphony No. 2, Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3, Sibelius’ Valse Triste, Dvorak’s Czech Suite and Edward German’s “Three Dances from Henry VIII.”

Jerome Kessler is the Topanga Symphony’s music director and conductor.
