Deep in the Jungle: Brazilian high society descended upon the Brazilian jungle capital of Manaus on Tuesday night to hear Spanish tenor Jose Carreras mark the 100th anniversary of the world’s most exotically located opera house. But outside the neoclassical, domed Amazonas Theatre, where audience members paid $600 a head, a small but noisy crowd of demonstrators protested the $300,000 fee paid to entice the tenor to one of Brazil’s poorest states. “Congratulations, Jose Carreras, we the unemployed are sponsoring you,” read one placard. The concert, which cost almost $1 million to stage, kicked off a year of celebrations for the theater built in 1896 by Brazilian rubber barons.
