A 22-year-old Westminster man was killed early Monday when a twice-convicted drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into the car in which he was riding, police said.
The victim, Roberto Ferrer, was in a 1990 Honda that was struck by Steven Edward Schumacher, 38, of Seal Beach, Fountain Valley Police Sgt. Dann Bean said.
Schumacher was driving a pickup truck west on Ellis Avenue about 3:30 a.m. when he ran the red light and broadsided the Honda, which was northbound on Bushard Street, Bean said.
Ferrer died at Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach.
Two female passengers in the Honda and Ferrer’s brother, who was driving, were treated for injuries at various hospitals and released, Bean said.
Schumacher and a passenger in his truck were also treated for injuries.
Schumacher was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter, Bean said.
Authorities said Schumacher was convicted of drunk driving in 1987 and 1991.
