Thousands Expected at 25th Passion Play
More than 3,000 are expected to gather in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood Friday for the 25th annual reenactment of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.
About 100 actors will stage the event, known as the Passion Play, on Good Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Cooper Road and Roosevelt Avenue.
The procession will travel six blocks through the neighborhood, stopping at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on North Juanita Avenue for the mock crucifixion.
“It is really emotional for a lot of people,” said Yolanda Lopez, an event coordinator. “There are people on the streets . . . actually crying because it seems so real.”
The event will re-create the judging of Christ by Pontius Pilate, Christ’s march bearing the cross and his crucifixion. For more information, call Lopez at 488-3132.
