Uy’s Key Victory Leads Magnolia Past Katella
Francis Uy won the deciding match for host Magnolia, which advanced to the Division II Southern Section finals with a 10-9 victory over Katella on Tuesday.
With the score tied, 9-9, Uy faced Katella’s Ha Duong. Uy won the first game, 11-7, but dropped the second one, 11-8. In the final game, Uy took Duong to a tiebreaker where she pulled off the 3-0 victory.
Unseeded Magnolia (14-4) will face No. 2 Loara at Cypress College at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
In another Division II semifinal:
Loara 11, Azusa 8--The girls’ doubles teams swept for Loara (18-1), which advances to its first championship match. Nina Mai and Mai Nguyen won their matches, 5-4, 15-11, and 15-6, 15-12, and teammates Sheila Soldivillo and Riacel Castillo won, 5-4, 12-15, 15-8, and 15-10, 9-15.
In Division I:
Alhambra Keppel 11, Garden Grove 8--Top-seeded Keppel (17-0) swept in girls’ singles and boys’ doubles. Garden Grove (14-3) swept in girls’ doubles with Lien Ly and Huong Nguyen winning, 15-7, 15-9, and 15-8, 15-4.
La Quinta 13, Bolsa Grande 6--The Aztec doubles teams accounted for nine of their 13 points as second-seeded La Quinta (14-1) advances to Thursday’s final against Keppel at Cypress College. La Quinta is appearing in its first final in 18 years.
