Ceremony Will Honor Fallen Police Officers
The Orange County peace officer memorial ceremony for 1996 will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Plaza of the Flags in Santa Ana’s Civic Center to honor officers killed in the line of duty.
This year the ceremony will commemorate Newport Beach Officer Bob Henry, shot in the head in March 1995 by a man who then took his own life.
Henry was the last officer to be killed on duty in Orange County until Wednesday, when a Brea officer was struck and killed by a freight train as he was investigating a crime scene.
Henry’s plaque will be added to 37 others on the memorial honoring officers who have been killed in line of duty over the years.
The ceremony will feature Newport Beach Police Chief Robert J. McDonell as the keynote speaker.
The peace officer memorial dedication began in 1986.
