Bruins Win With Burns, 2-0

B’Ann Burns pitched a four-hit shutout and UCLA ended Michigan’s 19-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory Thursday in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Division I women’s softball tournament at Columbus, Ga.

Burns, who walked one and struck out two, recorded her 12th consecutive victory and the 30th of her career as the Bruins improved to 46-9.

Michigan’s Sara Griffin surrendered both runs in two innings before reliever Kelly Holmes held the Bruins the rest of the way.

Alleah Poulson led off the second inning with a walk. Kim Wuest also walked, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Griffin hit Nicole Odom with a pitch to load the bases.

Christie Ambrosi singled in Poulson, and Wuest scored on a groundout by Julie Marshall.

Ambrosi was three for three for the Bruins, including one run batted in. Traci Conrad went three for three for the Wolverines (51-13).

OTHER GAMES

Whitney Floyd threw her 27th complete game of the season, a seven-hitter, as California (41-21) posted a 2-0 victory over Southwestern Louisiana (45-9). The junior left-hander matched her season high with seven strikeouts as she dealt the Cajuns only their fourth shutout in 54 games. . . . Eve Gaw earned her 20th victory with a two-hitter and Sara Pickering hit a two-run homer, leading Washington (57-8) to a 7-1 triumph over Princeton (47-7-1). The Huskies tagged Princeton starter Maureen Davies for three runs in the first two innings and added four in the sixth. Tami Storseth was three for four with two runs scored. . . . Doubles by Julie Reitan and Lety Pineda gave Arizona (55-9) an early lead and the Wildcats went on to a 5-2 victory over Iowa (47-18). Arizona pitcher Lisa Pitt went the distance and was in no serious trouble until the seventh when the Hawkeyes strung together some hits and the defense had a small lapse.
