OLYMPIC REPORT / 40 DAYS TO THE GAMES : Twigg Wins Third Trip to the Games
Earning a trip to her third Olympics, cyclist Rebecca Twigg of Colorado Springs beat Janie Quigley of Wilmington, Del., in 3 minutes, 41.31 seconds in the women’s pursuit final in Trexlertown, Pa., earning the final spot on the five-member U.S. women’s cycling team.
Later, the national team of Mike McCarthy, Christian Vande Velde, Carl Sundquist and Adam Laurent set a national record of 4:18.45 in the team pursuit national championship race, breaking the old mark of 4:18.68, set in 1990. Automatic Olympic berths didn’t accompany the national mark, however, and coaches will announce the four-member team today.
