Taking Hype Out of Hyperactivity
Re the editorial, “New Insight Into Hyperactivity,” May 2:
Kudos to UC Irvine for their discovery of a new hyperactive gene. I cannot believe that doctors have been diagnosing children as hyperactive for years, when sometimes that is not actually the case.
Call me crazy, but doctors should not give children a quick fix by prescribing them Ritalin when their problem may have been due to situations at home, or some other cause. This discovery of a new gene should make a tremendous difference regarding this disorder.
Parents should be aware of this and feel comforted by the fact that maybe soon, doctors can diagnose children properly.
