Hermosa Beach Hosts Volleyball Tournament
Beach volleyball teams from more than 50 countries will display their talent at an international volleyball tournament in Hermosa Beach this weekend.
More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the finals of the nationally televised tournament that started Wednesday.
City officials have erected a stadium, dubbed the volleseum, just north of the Hermosa Beach Pier and hope to draw a crowd that visits more than just the tournament.
“This is one of the premier volleyball events of the year,” said Councilman John Bowler.
“Anything we can do to couple events with our commercial district and downtown merchants is good for Hermosa,” Bowler said.
Over the next two years, the city plans to pump about $7 million into the Downtown Revitalization Project, which calls for wider sidewalks, better parking and the conversion of downtown into an outdoor plaza.
Competition in the Federation Internationale de Volleyball’s Bud Light World Beach Invitational will start at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The semifinals and finals will begin Sunday at 9 a.m.
