FOXBORO, Mass. — Shane Battelle’s goal in the ninth round of a shootout Thursday night gave the Columbus Crew a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution.
Marcelo Carrera had the only other tiebreaker goal for the Crew (5-9). Pete Marino gave Columbus the early lead in regulation, scoring off the rebound of a shot by Paul Caligiuri in the 20th minute.
Welton, a Brazilian forward, flicked in a header off a cross from just outside the box to tie the game in the 77th minute, forcing the shootout.
Jeff Aunger had the only tiebreaker goal for the Revolution (5-7).
Columbus goalie David Winner picked up a yellow card during the third shootout round. He argued that Aunger’s tiebreaker goal occurred after the five-second time limit expired on the shot.
