436 Lucky Devils Win as Halloween Lottery Hits 666
MADISON, Wis. — Lottery players with a devilish bent were in luck on Halloween when the Wisconsin Daily Pick 3 numbers came in at 666.
“This is frightening, to say the least,” said state Revenue Secretary Mark Bugher, who oversees the lottery.
The lottery said 436 players picked the winning numbers for a prize of $250 or $500 each, depending on how much was bet.
A biblical theologian, the Rev. Thomas Caldwell of Marquette University, said the devil is often linked to 666, a passage in the Book of Revelations that uses the number as a cryptogram for a beast.
Scholars believe Revelations was referring to Nero, the cruel Roman emperor, not Satan, Caldwell added.
