IRVINE — A 72-year-old man died early Saturday after he was struck by a van while directing traffic behind his stalled Ford Bronco in the middle of the San Diego Freeway, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.
Mauro Campos of Westminster was driving north on the San Diego Freeway south of MacArthur Boulevard about 5:30 a.m. when his vehicle stalled, the spokeswoman said. Campos exited the vehicle and stood behind it, waving away the oncoming traffic, investigators said.
It was dark and another motorist, who apparently did not see Campos, struck both the man and his vehicle truck, authorities said. Campos died on impact, according to a deputy coroner.
The motorist was not cited and the investigation is continuing.
