HUNTINGTON BEACH — An armed robber wearing a gorilla Halloween mask ambushed a restaurant owner as he came home from work early Saturday and stole a briefcase containing an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
James Filipan, 51, of Huntington Beach, was pulling into his driveway about 12:50 a.m. when he was surprised by the masked man, who jumped out of the bushes and struck Filipan on the head with the butt of a handgun, Police Lt. Luis Ochoa said. The robber fled with some cash and credit cards, police said.
Filipan, who owns Stevens Steak House in Commerce, suffered lacerations to his scalp. He was treated at the Columbia Huntington Beach Hospital and Medical Center and released, authorities said.
The robber, still at large, appeared to be a white man 30 to 35 years old, about 6-foot-2 with a thin build. He was wearing black clothing.
