Last Dive for TWA Wreckage Is Made
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Navy divers made their last trip to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve wreckage of TWA Flight 800, ending 15 weeks of a painstaking search that has yet to reveal a cause. Divers made more than 3,800 trips to the ocean floor off Long Island since the 747 exploded July 17. To mark the end of their work, dozens of divers placed a wreath and carnations in the ocean in memory of the 230 victims. The Navy said that 98% of the plane and 214 bodies had been retrieved. Searchers will now use scallop nets to dredge the ocean floor.
