COSTA MESA — A developmentally disabled 8-year-old girl was listed in critical condition Sunday night after she ran into traffic and was struck by a car on Harbor Boulevard, police said.
The girl, whose name was being withheld, apparently broke away from a group supervisor about 12:45 p.m. after eating at a restaurant in the 2300 block of Harbor Boulevard, police said. The victim, a resident of Fairview Developmental Center, was hit by a 23-year-old Costa Mesa driver, police said.
The girl was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she was treated for major head injuries, police said. The driver was not cited, though police are still investigating the accident.
