There’s More Hole Than Net at Pond

The goal Joe Sakic scored for Colorado on Sunday that initially went undetected because the puck went through the back of the net wasn’t the first such instance in Anaheim. It has happened twice before.

The New Jersey Devils actually forfeited a goal during a 6-1 loss to the Ducks on Nov. 5, 1995, because of a hole in the Ducks’ net. The Devils’ Steve Thomas took a shot that went through the net undetected, and the referee couldn’t be notified by the video goal judge until the next stoppage of play, which came when Ken Daneyko scored more than a minute later. Thomas’ shot was ruled a goal, and the clock was turned back, erasing Daneyko’s goal.

On March 20, 1995, Bobby Dollas was credited with a goal during a 4-2 loss to St. Louis after a video review showed the puck went through a hole.

“Bad ice, bad nets, what’s going on here?” Dollas asked. “Maybe it’s a little warmer here and the net frays, maybe it’s the way the nets are stored. Who knows? It’s happened before, and you wonder, how come?”
