Sakamoto Wins Singles Title Again
Katella’s Kristen Sakamoto won her second consecutive Empire League individual girls’ tennis title Friday at the Anaheim Tennis Center.
Sakamoto, who was top-seeded, defeated third-seeded Michelle Weisz of El Dorado, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Weisz, who upset teammate and second-seeded singles player Amanda Oldridge Thursday, teamed with Oldridge to win the doubles championship.
Weisz and Oldridge beat sisters Amanda and Brittany McMillan of El Dorado, 6-2, 6-3.
In the Freeway League:
Yuan wins--Top-seeded Iris Yuan of Sunny Hills defeated third-seeded Irene Noguchi of Troy, 6-2, 6-2, to win the league singles championship at Sunny Hills Racquet Club.
Top-seeded doubles pair Kathy Vestal and Sarah Riley of Troy defeated second-seeded Tara Chiazza and Megan Riley, also of Troy, 6-0, 6-7, 6-1, to win the league doubles championship.
In the Golden West League:
Son wins league title--Top-seeded Christina Son of Ocean View had little trouble against second-seeded Joanne Cruz of Rosary, beating her, 6-1, 6-2, for the individual league title at the Santa Ana Tennis Center.
Cheryl Hamilton and Eleanor Luzano of Rosary beat teammates Michelle Hamilton and Lauren Erych, 6-4, 6-0, for the doubles championship.
