Canyon Is in Position to Win First League Title
ORANGE — Jermaine Montgomery rushed six times for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead Canyon to a 48-19 Century League victory over Santa Ana Valley at El Modena High School Friday.
The Comanches, who have never won a Century League football championship, have a chance to win the league title next week against Foothill. Both teams are undefeated in league play.
Canyon (7-2, 4-0 in league) raced to a 21-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game and maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way. The Comanches’ defense limited the Falcons (0-8, 0-4) to just 70 yards in total offense in the first half.
Canyon broke on top after less than a minute had expired when quarterback Craig Scott went over center from one yard out. The Comanches made it 14-0 when Komron Tarkeshian scored on a five-yard run. Montgomery’s 21-yard run made in 21-0.
After a Canyon fumble at its own 21, Falcon quarterback Mike Silvas hit Koa Bartlett with a seven-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 21-7 with 2:27 left in the half.
With 23 seconds left in the half, a two-yard scoring pass from Craig Scott to twin brother Chad made it 28-7 and Montgomery’s 80-yard run on the first play of the second half stretched the lead to 34-7.
The Falcons scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 70-yard pass from Silvas to Brian Fort and a one-yard run by Hector Mora.
