Cushy Camping
For outdoor enthusiasts who don’t think “roughing it” should be an ordeal, there’s a growing market of products to make camping convenient (F1A). Darren Odgers, above, shows off a backpack-sized espresso maker. . . . That odd gizmo on his head is a hands-free flashlight.
Royal Nephew
A member of the British royal family will visit Thousand Oaks this weekend (F1B). David Linley, who as the son of Queen Elizabeth’s sister Princess Margaret is 12th in line to the throne, will be at Borders Books at 1 p.m. Saturday promoting his second book on elegant furniture.
Tax Relief
Cities throughout Ventura County are enjoying a boost in their sales tax receipts (B1). Several new shopping venues, and increased confidence among workers helped create the added sales. . . . “Spending had been delayed for years, and people are finally getting out and spending money,” says economist Mark Schniepp.
Improved Habitat
Ormond Beach could receive about $3 million worth of wetlands restoration, but first Southern California Edison Co. must get California Coastal Commission approval to scale back restoration in San Diego and Orange counties (A3). . . . If approved, Edison proposes a conservation easement on about 150 acres it owns near Ormond Beach.
