Man Burned Trying to Save Home Dies

SAN DIEGO — A 48-year-old man who was severely burned in the fire that raged in northern San Diego County last month has died of his injuries.
The county medical examiner said David Hammond of Elfin Grove died Tuesday night at UC San Diego Medical Center of burns sustained Oct. 21 as he tried to save his home from the flames.
Hammond, a psychologist, suffered third-degree burns over 45% of his body and never recovered consciousness. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Hammond is the only known fatality of the fire that burned more than 8,500 acres and destroyed 101 homes in La Costa, San Marcos, Elfin Forest and Harmony Grove. The cause of the blaze is still undetermined.
