Titans Win a Game, but Lose the Match to Long Beach State
The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team won the Western Division of the Big West Conference Saturday night with an 8-15, 15-4, 15-13, 15-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton at the Pyramid in front of 1,018.
It is the first time the 49ers have given up a game to the Titans since Long Beach Coach Brian Gimmillaro took over as head coach 12 seasons ago.
Jenn Snyder had 14 kills and six blocks, Nique Crump had 12 kills and nine blocks and Michelle Jones added 11 kills, 14 digs, five assists and four blocks for Long Beach.
Long Beach (28-1, 15-1) next plays North Texas in the Big West Tournament Saturday at UC Santa Barbara. Cal State Fullerton is 16-13, 6-10.
At the Simpson College women’s basketball tournament:
Pacific Christian 63, LIFE Bible 40--Kerry Massey scored 20 points and Becky Snavely had 16 as Pacific Christian won the Simpson College Invitational in Redding. Nicole Kubota, the tournament MVP, had six points. Adrienne Penn and Massey also made the all-tournament team.
In the Southern California Women’s tennis regionals:
Cooper and Vallin advance--UCLA’s Annica Cooper defeated Yvonne Doyle of San Diego, 7-5, 7-5, to advance to today’s singles finals at the UC Irvine tennis stadium. Cooper plays Nevada Las Vegas’ Marianne Vallin, a 7-5, 6-2 winner over USC’s Ditta Huber.
Pepperdine’s Angela Lawrence and Isabella Petrov defeated San Diego’s Julie Baird and Doyle, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to the doubles final. Arizona State’s Stephanie Lansdorp and Katy Propstra also advanced, defeating Vallin and Gee Gee Garvin, 6-3, 6-3.
