Davis, Iowa State No Match for Green, Nebraska

Outgaining national rushing leader Troy Davis was a satisfying achievement for Ahman Green. Even more so because his team won.

Green, slowed earlier this season by a toe injury, ran for a career-high 214 yards and No. 5 Nebraska held Davis in check in rolling past Iowa State, 49-14, in a Big 12 game at Ames, Iowa Saturday.

“It was fun,” said Green, who carried a career-high 29 times on a field soaked by a near-constant rain. “I had a lot of guys behind me with that line. By the time I’d get hit, I was hitting a cornerback or the safety.

“I wasn’t really thinking about me vs. Troy or vs. Iowa State. I was just thinking about winning this game.”

Davis carried 34 times for 138 yards--64 below his season average. Facing a defense that ranked sixth nationally against the run, Davis had only 83 yards through three quarters and got 36 on Iowa State’s final possession, when Nebraska was leading 49-7 and using reserves.

Davis needs 40 yards in Iowa State’s season final at Kansas State next Saturday to become the first major-college player to rush for 2,000 yards twice.

The Cornhuskers (9-1 overall and 7-0 in the Big 12 scored on six of its first seven possessions in building a 42-7 lead and handed Iowa State (2-8, 1-6) its sixth straight loss.

Green’s previous high rushing was 176 yards against Washington State last season. He did not play in the fourth quarter.

Missouri 49, Baylor 42--Devin West’s touchdown run in the third overtime Saturday carried Missouri to a 49-42 victory over Baylor, which had rallied from a four-touchdown deficit behind reserve quarterback Jeff Watson.

West ran 12 yards, then went 13 yards for the winning touchdown. Watson threw four incompletions as Baylor failed to force a fourth overtime.

Missouri is 4-6 and 2-5; Baylor is 4-6 and 1-6.

Texas 38, Kansas 17--Ricky Williams rushed for 190 yards in helping to set up each of the Longhorns’ five touchdowns at Lawrence, Kan. Williams became the seventh player in Texas history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season.

Texas (6-2, 5-2) moved within a victory of the conference’s South Division title, needing to beat Texas A&M; in its regular-season final Nov. 29.

June Henley had 210 yards in 44 carries for Kansas (4-6, 2-5) and scored two touchdowns, becoming the first Jayhawk to score more than 100 points in a season. Kansas trailed, 24-17, after three quarters and played into winds of more than 40 mph in the fourth.

Texas A&M; 33, Oklahoma 16--D’Andre Hardeman scored two touchdowns and Kyle Bryant kicked four field goals in the Aggies’ come-from-behind victory at over Oklahoma at College Station, Texas.

Texas A&M; is 6-5 and 4-3; Oklahoma is 3-7 and 3-4.
