Sunny Hills Shuts Down Costa Mesa
BUENA PARK — Despite adverse conditions, Sunny Hills running backs Adam Rodriguez and Kevin Haiola combined for 218 yards rushing as the Lancers defeated Costa Mesa, 14-0, Friday night in a Southern Section Division VIII opening-round game at Buena Park.
Haiola rushed for 111 yards in 18 carries and Rodriguez added 107 yards in 27 carries for Sunny Hills (8-3). The Lancers will play Rancho Alamitos, which defeated Bellflower, 50-21.
Sunny Hills drove 54 yards in 12 plays on its first possession to set up Jared Bruce’s 30-yard field goal. Bruce added a 21-yarder in the second quarter and the Lancers took a 6-0 halftime lead.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Rodriguez intercepted Dan Baume’s pass at the Mustang 16. Six plays later, quarterback Chris Zeiler scored on a one-yard run to seal the victory.
Sunny Hills’ defense, led by David Goodloe and Henry Olstynski, forced three turnovers by Costa Mesa (6-5). The Mustangs were held to 70 total yards in offense.
