In a Division III match:
Woodbridge 13, Santa Margarita 5--The top-seeded Warriors, led by their dominating singles players, easily advanced to Tuesday’s Division III Southern Section finals by beating fourth-seeded Santa Margarita.
Woodbridge (22-2), which has beaten the Eagles (11-9) in three meetings this season, got a clean sweep in singles from Natalie Exon, Adriana Hockicko and Rachel Gunther.
The last time the teams met, Woodbridge won, 12-6, but Gunther won only one set. This time Gunther’s play was impressive, dropping only five games at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3. Exon finished the day 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 and Hockicko won 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.
Many thought the match would be closer than the previous matches after the Warriors lost top double’s player Courtney Tenerelli, who transferred to Corona del Mar at the end of the regular season. But Woodbridge got a sweep from its No. 1 team of Michelle Stiefel and Danielle Hustedt 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, advancing the Warriors to the finals against Westlake Village Westlake, while Tenerelli’s new team was eliminated.
