Council Doesn’t Back O.C. Landfill Sale
Orange County’s government should not sell its landfill system because it is a valuable public asset, City Council members have declared.
The council passed a resolution that urges the County Board of Supervisors to halt its proposed sale of the landfills. The supervisors are considering the sale to raise money for the county treasury, which was drained by the late 1994 bankruptcy.
The council’s resolution states that the Orange County landfills, unlike other public dumps in Southern California, have capacity for many more years. That potential is valuable for the communities of Orange County and should not be sold to outside interests, the council said.
The council also urged the supervisors to negotiate long-term disposal contracts with cities so that residents could benefit from inexpensive trash fees.
