Parking Zone Created for Store’s Neighbors
The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to create a preferential parking district around the newly opened Bloomingdale’s department store in Sherman Oaks to keep shoppers from taking up residential parking spaces.
The district was proposed by Councilman Mike Feuer, who said parking on residential streets around the Fashion Square Sherman Oaks has become scarce since Bloomingdale’s opened nearly two weeks ago.
With the holiday shopping season approaching, Feuer asked the council to establish the district on an immediate basis to ensure that holiday crowds don’t cause further parking problems. Normally, the districts are established only after lengthy public hearings and traffic studies are completed.
The district was established within the residential area bounded by Riverside Drive, Hazeltine Avenue, Woodman Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard.
Homeowners on three blocks have submitted the necessary petitions in support of the district. Today, city workers will post signs restricting parking to residents with permits. The cost of the permits will be paid by a traffic mitigation fund created by the mall.
