Dos Remedios Rebuilds, Resigns at Burroughs
BURBANK — Robert dos Remedios announced his resignation as Burroughs High football coach Tuesday, saying he is burned out and is not getting enough administrative support.
Dos Remedios, 30, had a three-year record of 15-15-1, leading Burroughs (8-3) to second place in the Foothill League this season and its first playoff berth since 1993.
He cited lack of support from an administration that he said never accepted his get-tough approach and didn’t approve when he cut players for disciplinary reasons.
“I think there’s a different philosophical outlook on my part on [how to coach sports],” dos Remedios said. “I’m pretty high key. I’m pretty loud and fiery. But we’re living in the age of a million second chances. I caught a lot of flack for letting a kid go.”
Burroughs Principal Tim Buchanan did not return phone calls.
Dos Remedios appeared to be bringing stability to the Indians’ program after years of turmoil.
In 1994, he took over a program with an 8-32-1 record the previous four seasons. After 3-7 and 4-5-1 seasons, Burroughs enjoyed its best season of the decade this season.
It ended last week with a 47-20 loss to Dominguez in the first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.
“I think an 8-3 year at Burroughs is phenomenal,” dos Remedios said. “I don’t think it can get much better than that as long as we’re in such a tough league.”
Dos Remedios would not rule out a return to coaching in the future.
“I miss it already,” he said. “There’s a big, empty spot.”
He recommended assistant Keith Knoop as his successor.
“I don’t know if they’ll take me but I’ll give it a shot,” said Knoop, who plans to keep the same system but will bring a slightly different coaching style if hired. “I’ve got a lot of time invested in these kids.”
