This may be the final week to see Comet Halse-Bopp before it disappears behind the sun. It sets in the southwest early in the evening, so look at about 6 p.m., as soon as the sky is fully dark. It forms a nearly perfect equilateral triangle with the brilliant planet Jupiter and the bright star, Altair. Use binoculars, and look for a faint circular smudge. The comet reappears in the morning sky late in January, and it is closest to Earth and at its brightest in late March.
