156 Yards Remind Jenkins of Historic 619 in High School

Brigham Young running back Ronney Jenkins, a freshman from Hueneme High, shared offensive player of the week recognition in the Western Athletic Conference with San Jose State quarterback Carl Dean.
Jenkins rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns as the seventh-ranked Cougars rolled over Utah, 37-17, and clinched the WAC Mountain Division title.
“I found all the room I needed,” Jenkins said. “It felt like my last high school game.”
Jenkins set a national high school record by rushing for 619 yards against Rio Mesa High last year in his final game.
Tough tackler: Sophomore defensive end Rick Windham of Antelope Valley College was a Foothill Conference player of the week.
Windham made 13 tackles, including three sacks, in Antelope Valley’s 16-14 loss to Chaffey last Saturday.
Scribe favorite: Cross-country runner Amy Skieresz of Arizona has been selected as female athlete of the month for October by the Track and Field Writers of America.
Skieresz, a sophomore who is undefeated in six races this season, posted victories in the Maine Invitational and Pre-NCAA championship meets last month.
Skieresz, formerly of Agoura High, has a couple of legs up for November, too. She already has won the District VIII championships and NCAA championships.
Abrams honored: Montclair Prep boys’ basketball coach Howard Abrams is among 14 people selected to the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
He will be inducted Jan. 18, 1997, at the Westside Jewish Community Center.
