Unnatural Way to Celebrate
* Am I the only one who found the Nov. 26 story of the 110-foot Christmas tree in Newport Beach’s Fashion Island obscene?
I love cheerful yuletide celebration and perhaps it’s the duty of The Times to tell the story of the battle of the malls to see which has the tallest tree.
But to chop down a mature tree, implant it with 450 branches, provide it just enough nourishment to service the shoppers for six weeks and then send it to the landfill seems a poor way to embody the holiday spirit.
Trees may not have feelings, but some of us do.
If the season has turned commercial and plastic, so should the tree.
