49ers’ Talk Is Cheap to Packers’ Jones
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Packer defensive end Sean Jones is in his 13th NFL season, so when some of the 49ers tried to intimidate Green Bay during pregame warmups, well, Jones laughed.
“The 49ers are a great organization and have shown the NFL how to put together a winning franchise,” Jones said. “But here recently it seems like there are some guys on that team who believe you play this game with your mouth. A lot of them are young guys who have never [done a thing] in this league. You got to play to earn respect.
“Come on, this intimidation stuff went out the window with Ben Davidson.”

Fritz Shurmur, the Packers’ defensive coordinator said, “We didn’t mention [Elvis] Grbac’s name once all week. We were preparing for Steve Young.”
Young was in for nine plays, which apparently means it doesn’t take much preparation to handle Grbac at quarterback.

The Packers now have the NFL record for most consecutive “home” playoff victories with 10, which includes two playoff games in Milwaukee. They previously shared the mark with Buffalo.

Bryant Young, the 49ers’ Pro Bowl defensive tackle, was taken into the locker room in the first quarter for X-rays of his neck and back and then underwent an MRI at a hospital. The X-rays and scan were negative and Young was released and returned to Lambeau Field, although he didn’t return to the game.

The 49ers, noted for their dramatic moves when failing to win the Super Bowl, are expected to dismiss offensive coordinator Marc Trestman. They might also want to acquire a quality running back.
Grbac led all 49er rushers against the Packers with four carries for 32 yards. Terry Kirby ran six times for 14 yards and William Floyd had five carries for 13 yards, including a fumble in the fourth quarter.
They might also want to work on finding a reliable receiver opposite Jerry Rice. J.J. Stokes, who sat out the remainder of the regular season after the 49ers’ first game against the Packers in October because of an injured wrist, failed to impress while in the lineup.
His replacement, Terrell Owens, had played well, but he dropped three passes against the Packers, including a pass that was tipped into the hands of Craig Newsome for an interception.

The hibachis were already cooking the bratwurst at 8 a.m.--more than 3 1/2 hours before kickoff, and Packer fans were sitting in the rain waiting for them to be finished. It was cold and miserable--and they were loving it.
And at game’s end, the team announced a new attendance record (60,787) while pointing out there were only three no-shows.
“They probably got stuck in traffic,” safety LeRoy Butler suggested.

And finally, why did the 49ers lose?
“The key to the game by all means,” Packer wide receiver Antonio Freeman said, “is that it never rains in sunny California and the 49ers weren’t ready to play.”
Never rains in sunny California: Tell that to the folks in Northern California.
