Schools Closed by Winds Set to Reopen

Maclay Middle School and Primary Center, the only two Los Angeles Unified School District campuses to be closed as a result of the powerful winds, will reopen today, officials said.

About 1,400 students from the two schools were scheduled to return from winter break Tuesday. Instead, students received an extra day of vacation when officials canceled classes because of the danger posed by wind-whipped debris.

Cleanup crews were busy at the schools Tuesday, removing debris and setting up emergency generators in case additional power outages hit the area, LAUSD officials said.

Patrick Spencer, a spokesman for the LAUSD, said officials decided against closing other Valley campuses Tuesday when the winds decreased overnight Monday.

“I don’t ever recall anything like this before and I have been here for 17 years,” said Spencer. “We’ve closed for rain when there was a chance of flooding, but never for wind.”
