A woman was killed Sunday when her pickup truck careened off the Ventura Freeway near Vineyard Avenue and hit a palm tree, authorities said.
The woman, whose name has not been released pending notification of family members, suffered massive head and internal injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene, California Highway Patrol officials said.
According to CHP officers, the woman was heading south about 2:40 p.m. when she tried to make a lane change, hit a car and lost control of the truck. The pickup went over an embankment and hit the tree, splitting it in two.
A passerby tried to help the injured woman, but paramedics arrived to find her unresponsive. Oxnard Fire Department Capt. Gary Sugich said the impact likely killed the woman instantly.
Witnesses said the victim was wearing her seat belt and that the truck’s air bag had deployed.
