Visiting Navy Ship to Be Open for Tours

A Navy ship sailing from San Diego to Japan will dock at Port Hueneme Navy base and be open for public tours Saturday and Sunday.
The guided-missile frigate Vandegrift will visit Port Hueneme’s Naval Surface Warfare Center from Friday to May 15 to undergo tests and evaluation inspection.
The primary mission of the Vandegrift--which is equipped with missile, gun and anti-submarine warfare systems--is to escort and protect convoys and replenishment, amphibious landings, and carrier battle groups, according to Navy officials.
“It’s a chance for people to see how their tax dollars are spent,” said Teri Reid, public affairs officer at the base. “It’s not too often that we get a ship in that’s open for tours. It’s a rare opportunity to see the Navy up close and get a chance to meet the people who are serving their country and defending the nation.”
It’s also an opportunity for people to see how the civilian employees assist the Navy, Reid said.
Tours will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Visitors may enter through the Pleasant Valley gate at the Naval Construction Battalion Center where signs will lead to parking on the pier.
