77 Are Drowned or Killed After Clashes

At least 77 people were killed or drowned in the Kerio River in the Rift Valley after clan violence involving rustling, police reported. Police spokesman Peter Kimanthi told the commercial Kenya Television Network that security officers shot and killed seven cattle rustlers while up to 70 others drowned in a swollen river. In its account, the Daily Nation newspaper reported that as many as 90 armed cattle rustlers were killed or drowned during a fierce two-day battle with security forces. Ethnic fighting often involves rustling.
