“The Fifth Element,” starring Bruce Willis as a Brooklyn cabdriver who ends up trying to save the world, was the weekend’s top box-office attraction with an estimated $17.2 million.

The futuristic science-fiction yarn, which opened the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, appeared to earn nearly twice as much as No. 2 “Fathers’ Day,” the only other wide-release debut over the Mother’s Day weekend. The Robin Williams-Billy Crystal comedy was expected to take in $9 million, according to industry estimates.

Final weekend box-office figures were to be released today.

Overall box-office receipts were down from the year-ago Mother’s Day weekend, when “Twister” opened with $41 million.
